Assistant Professor/ Range Scientist
(50% teaching, 50% research / 10 month tenure track position)

The Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State Univeristy is seeking an Assistant Professor/Range Scientist, full-time, 10-month, tenure-track position to begin preferably January 2012, absolutely August 2012.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Job responsibilities include teaching core courses in Range Science, and developing an extramurally funded research program in rangeland resource management appropriate to the Northern Great Plains. Successful candidate will work cooperatively with other range scientists, extension specialists, and other faculty members. Teaching responsibilities will likely include Introduction to Range Management, Wildland Ecosystems, and Integrated Natural Resource Management; opportunity for development of undergraduate or graduate course in area of expertise. Candidate will advise undergraduate and graduate students and assist in recruitment and placement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. degree completed by application deadline in Range Science or closely related field with an emphasis in rangeland ecology, watershed/riparian management, or range livestock production. Candidate must be an enthusiastic teacher and excellent communicator (verbal, written and electronic). Applicant must demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with faculty, extension field specialists, producers, and other clientele. Ranch management experience is desirable. Extension and/or teaching experience is highly desirable. Knowledge of rangelands and pasturelands similar to those found in the northern Great Plains is desirable.

SALARY: "Commensurate with qualifications."

UNIVERSITY/COMMUNITY: SDSU is a land grant university and the state's largest institution of higher education with an enrollment approximately 13,000 students. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota a community of approximately 22,100 persons on the Eastern border of the state. The city has an excellent K-12 educational system. During a campus visit, a tour of the education systems and visit with school administrators may be arranged. The city is also accessible to major medical facilities, has an active social and cultural environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within an easy commute. Sioux Falls, a city of approximately 150,000 persons is a 40-minute drive to the south. Brookings is also located about 200 miles west of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, a metropolitan area with major design and art centers such as International Market Square, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, and Weisman Art Museum.
